The 77th Annual World 14.1 Championship concluded last week and our very own Del Sim was a contender! The tournament ran from October 2nd through October 8th over at Steinway Billiards in Queens, NY.

NYC Grind — Joe Gonzales

The tournament was run in a round robin format for the first couple days with players broken up into 4 groups. From within those four groups, only 16 players would advanced based on performance. The first set of rounds were a race to 100 balls. After the initial round robin was complete, the bracket became a single elimination to 200 balls.

The first day started off with an excellent lineup:

11:00 am Lee Van Corteza PHL vs USA John Schott
12:30 pm Danny Harriman USA vs SCO Del Sim
2:00 pm John Schmidt USA vs USA Danny Barouty
4:00 pm Darren Appleton ENG vs USA Ed Culhane
5:30 pm Thorsten Hohmann GER vs JAM Rhys Chen
7:00 pm Mika Immonen FIN vs USA Danny Harriman
8:30 pm Darren Appleton ENG vs FIN Ollie Turkulainen

Lee Van Corteza kicked things off with a perfect 100 ball run in the first match to set the tone for the tournament. Darren Appleton later had a response a of 230+ ball run. Thorsten, not to be excluded, had a high 180+ ball run of his own.

Del Sim joined the party, not in ball run, but in having a perfect record. Throughout the round robin, he went undefeated 8–0 against some great names like Danny Harriman and, last year’s champion, Mika Immonen.

He was unfortunately knocked out in a long 5 hour battle by Scotland rival, Jonni Fulcher. He ended the tournament with an excellent record of 8–1 and a lot to be proud of for his first world championship 14.1 experience.

Jonni Fulcher went on to play Lee Van Corteza in the semi-finals. The match was another long battle, but Corteza ended up putting the numbers down first.

On Sunday, Lee Van Corteza went head-to-head with 4-time champion Thorsten Hohmann. It was one for the record books but Corteza pulled ahead of Hohmann in the stretch and won the title 300–183.
